And don’t forget that quilting is meant to be relaxing – give yourself permission to just enjoy the process instead of getting frustrated with “mistakes.” Working on an ironing board and having a pressing cloth or paper handy are musts. Pressing is so important too! I’ve had situations where not pressing fabric pieces open caused weird wrinkling issues later on. Some friendly advice: When piecing small quilt blocks, use a short stitch length and go slow to keep accurate seam lines. An adjustable seam guide foot, 90° angle ruler, and quality scissors are invaluable for keeping novice quilt pieces straight and true. And as with any new hobby, having the right tools makes the process more enjoyable. Taking it slow and focusing on accurately sewing seams half an inch wide will serve you well in building skills for more complex designs down the line. Remember that mistakes are how we learn, so don’t be too hard on yourself if pieces aren’t perfect.
